Spyro 2: Ripto's Rage - A Superior Sequel

The return of gems in Spyro 2: Ripto's Rage brings a new purpose to the game, as they are now needed to pay Moneybags to unlock areas and learn new abilities. These orbs come in varying difficulties, with some later ones being fiendishly tough. Fans of the original Spyro will be instantly comfortable with the gameplay, as it remains largely identical.

In addition to progressing through the game, these orbs are necessary to open gateways to certain levels and complete side-missions. NPC characters offer Spyro tasks and challenges in each level, which reward him with a green orb when completed. The excitement of discovering what's coming next adds replay value to the game.

The levels and worlds are visually stunning, with imaginative themes behind them. Each area is concluded by a boss battle against Ripto himself. The aim is to beat each level, gaining the talisman for that area before taking on the boss. There are three main world hubs - Summer Forest, Autumn Plains, and Winter Tundra - with portals to various levels within them.

The plot is simple: Spyro and his dragonfly partner Sparx get stranded in Avalar after Ripto attacks them, destroying their portal home. They agree to help defeat him and take back Avalar from his minions. Ripto was summoned by a group of freedom fighters, including Hunter the Cheetah, Elora the Faun, and the Professor.

While Spyro 2: Ripto's Rage may not be as fondly remembered as the original, it is actually a superior game in many areas. The series has spawned more sequels and spin-offs over the years, with varying results. However, the purple dragon remains an iconic character that entertained all ages with his bright, colorful gameplay.
